The funnest part of surprise engagements is the ruse behind it. The future grooms I’ve worked with all had fun plans to trick their new fianceés into getting them to a location to pop the question.
I worked with Mario for almost a month to nail down exactly where we were going to do it all. Like I do for all my surprise engagement fellas, I scouted the location the week before and found the best spot for the proposal. And then staying true to my nature of planning out every detail, I sent them a very color coded google maps screenshot that detailed exactly where to park, where to come in through, what route to walk, where to propose and even where to park their bike if they needed to. Hey, anything to ease the stress of a very nervous guy! (which, frankly, also applies to me as well on the day of the shoot )
Two months ago I shot a surprise engagement for Mario’s brother (blog of that shoot here!). During that engagement, there were two champagne glasses. One said “I Asked” and the other “I Said Yes”. So Mario had the great idea of showing up to St.Pete Beach and having a random stranger deliver a gift to him and Jaclynn. Inside were the two champagne glasses! Once Jaclynn opened them up (after some very thorough gift wrapping!), Mario dropped down on one knee and popped the question. There was some great emotion to the moment that was increased when the family surprised Jaclynn and rushed in to congratulate the newly engaged couple.
Being able to shoot two surprise engagement shoots for the same family in the span of two months has been an absolute blast. The Ojedas, Jacobs and Meisels are wonderful and their presence made the pics that much better. I hope we cross paths again soon!
